Goodman central air conditioners, gas furnaces, heat pumps and package units are built to a budget. They are simple to work on, and common parts are easy to get, which keeps most repairs in Novato and San Rafael homes quick. The flip side is that small problems left alone, such as a dirty coil, a slow leak or a thermostat that reads wrong, grow into bigger ones. Regular care and an honest diagnosis keep the repair bills small.

Goodman is part of Daikin, the Japanese heating and cooling manufacturer. The two brands remain separate product lines, and Goodman also builds Amana-brand equipment under license, so some components are shared across them. What a Goodman maintenance visit covers
Like any system, a Goodman lasts longer and fails less with routine care. Our maintenance visit works through the parts that most often lead to breakdowns:
- Filter. Checked and replaced; a clogged filter is behind many frozen coils and tripped furnace limits.
- Evaporator coil. The indoor coil is inspected and cleaned if dust has matted the fins.
- Condenser coil. The outdoor coil is cleaned so the unit can shed heat on hot afternoons.
- Refrigerant charge. Measured with superheat or subcooling, not guessed from the pressure alone. A low reading starts a leak search rather than a top-off.
- Electrical parts. Capacitors are tested against their rating, contactors checked for pitting, and connections tightened.
- Condensate drain. Flushed, with the trap and any float switch checked.
- Furnace side. Igniter, flame sensor, inducer, pressure switch and venting, in heating season.

Refrigerant leaks: find, repair, then recharge
A Goodman AC or heat pump that slowly loses cooling over a season, or ices up at the indoor coil, is often low on refrigerant, and low refrigerant always means a leak. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak means paying for more next year. We locate the leak with electronic detection, bubble solution or a nitrogen pressure test, and then explain the options: a repair at an accessible joint or valve, or a replacement coil if the leak is inside it. Thermostat problems
When temperatures in the house wander, the thermostat is the first thing we check on a Goodman system. Common faults: a setting that has changed, a heat pump configured as a plain AC, a loose low-voltage wire, a thermostat in the sun, or one that reads a couple of degrees off. Goodman package units
Package units hold the compressor, coils, blower and, on gas-electric models, the burner in one outdoor cabinet. They get the same checks as split systems, plus the cabinet seals and the duct connections where they enter the house.
Local notes
