Frigidaire heating and cooling equipment is priced for value, and it turns up in Marin homes as a central air conditioner or heat pump on a ducted system, a gas furnace, a ductless unit added to one room, or a window unit that gets a family through the few hot afternoons each year. The fixes are mostly ordinary ones: airflow, an electrical part, a drain or a refrigerant leak. The honest part of the job is telling you which repairs are worth paying for.
Central air conditioners and heat pumps
A Frigidaire central AC has a compressor, a condenser coil and a fan outdoors, and an indoor coil on top of a furnace or in an air handler. A heat pump adds a reversing valve and a defrost control so it can heat as well. When one stops cooling, we check in this order: thermostat and power, filter and indoor airflow, the outdoor coil, the capacitor and contactor, and only then the refrigerant charge. Furnaces
Frigidaire gas furnaces fail in the same places as other brands: the hot-surface igniter, the flame sensor, the pressure switch and inducer motor, the limit switches and the blower motor. The control board usually flashes a code that narrows the search. A furnace that lights and then shuts off within seconds most often has a dirty flame sensor. Reduced airflow
Weak airflow from the registers is a common complaint on Frigidaire central systems, and it has a short list of causes:

Ductless Frigidaire units
Ductless units are serviced like any mini-split: washable filters, the coil and blower wheel inside the head, the condensate drain, and the flare joints on the refrigerant lines. A head that drips, smells musty or blows weakly is usually dirty rather than broken. See ductless mini-split service.
Window units: when a repair makes sense
A window air conditioner is a small sealed system in one box. A clogged filter, a blocked drain hole, a failed switch or a fan motor can be worth fixing. A refrigerant leak or a failed compressor almost never is, because sealed-system work on a window unit usually costs more than a new unit. We will say so plainly rather than sell you a repair that does not pay back. If a window unit is how you cool a room every summer, a ductless system is the longer-term option.

Local notes
Many older homes in Sausalito, Larkspur and San Rafael were built without central air, and some still rely on window units. Near the water, mornings are cool and the AC sits idle for long stretches; a unit that has not run since last year should be cleaned and checked before the first hot spell, not during it.
